Snowflakes
The speed of growth changes constantly on the long way the snowflake to the ground. Sometimes the flake grows preferentially at its tips, then again more broadly. Each star created in this way is unique. all have a six-fold geometry. Snowflakes with four or eight arms are not possible, they are all based on the hexagon because that is the structure in which water crystallizes.
