Named after Beryllium, the material of choice for the beam vacuum chambers around collision points in particle colliders due to a combination of transparency to particles, high specific stiffness and compatibility with ultra-high vacuum.
The beryllium beam pipe is the centrepiece of the experimental hardware (yellow in the photo), as it is located at the heart of the interaction area, which the subatomic particle collisions are occurring. Shown is the CMS inside CERN.
