WATCH FACE FOR WEAR OS (WFF), WEAR OS (LEGACY) & Tizen

Nürnberger Ei

The first handable watch. Pocket watches with a spring mechanism and an oval shape were formerly called Nürnberger eggs. At that time, Nürnberg was home to the world's best craftsmen and blacksmiths. However, the term "egg" does not come from the shape of the clocks, but may be derived from the word "clock". They were often attributed to the Nürnberberg precision mechanic Peter Henlein, since around 1510 he manufactured the first watches that could be worn on the body. However, there are doubts that he is the originator of the Nürnberger eggs, because the first dates are around 1550 after his death (1542). Peter Henlein built clocks in the form of tall cylindrical cans and small balls in the shape of an apple. The portable watch was only made possible by the invention of the mainspring before 1430. This enabled the large weight-driven clocks to be downsized and found place on a table. The exact timing of the further downsizing is controversial. What is certain is that since Peter Henlein they could only be housed in a hand-sized housing. The invention of the tension spring and the torsion pendulum as clocks was often attributed to Peter Henlein, but such speed controls were already used in the early 15th century. At the latest, however, Henlein ensured miniaturization.
