A planisphere, also known as a world map, is a scaled representation of the entire Earth's surface on a two-dimensional plane.
It allows you to see all the continents, oceans, and countries at once, although it requires mathematical formulas (projections) to flatten the sphere.
Main Elements and Types:
Political: Show territorial boundaries, countries, provinces, and cities.
Physical: Focus on relief, indicating mountains, rivers, lakes, and plains.
Thematic: Represent specific data such as climate, population, or natural resources.
Key Components: These include a scale (which indicates the size ratio to reality), a legend or symbology (to interpret the colors and markings), and a coordinate grid (parallels and meridians).
Fun Fact: Distortion
Because our planet is a geoid (an oblate spheroid), it is impossible to transfer it to a flat surface without altering its proportions. Therefore, there are different map projections. For example:
Mercator projection: Ideal for maritime navigation, but it makes countries near the poles appear much larger than they are.
Peters projection: Shows continents in their true size proportions, although it slightly alters their shapes.
Note: The term is also used in astronomy to refer to celestial planispheres, which are flat maps showing the position of stars and constellations visible from Earth.
