E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is a sci-fi film by Steven Spielberg, and tells the story of Elliott, a boy who befriends an extraterrestrial who is stranded on Earth. Released on June 11, 1982, it was an immediate blockbuster, surpassing Star Wars to become the highest-grossing film of all time β a record it held for eleven years until Jurassic Park, another Spielberg-directed film, surpassed it in 1993. It is considered to be one of the greatest films of all time and it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
