Early military protective grille trench watch, one of the very first wristwatches. The trench clock from 1914 is equipped with a splinter protection grille, the first purely military clock for the army and ground troops. These probably the first pure wristwatches in history were never bought or issued by the army like the later pilot's watches, but were only offered on the market and bought privately. The purpose of these first military wristwatches - and probably the only motivation to pay for them privately and use them at the front - was to save time - possibly life-saving - compared to a pocket watch that needed time to get out of a pocket and stow away again.
